Tetras are small soft-water schooling characins, mostly out of South America. Six or more of a single species is the planning minimum. Below that they sulk, lose colour, and look like a different fish from the one in the shop tank. The water-chemistry catch is that classic tetra setups want soft, slightly acidic water, which does not mix with the hard alkaline water that mollies, swordtails, and most livebearers actually need.
